FAQs

1. Is Naturopathic Medicine right for me in Ajax?
Yes, it is! I can say that without knowing you or your health concerns, I believe it’s right for everyone. How can preventative health care, living a healthier life, and having a happier life not be good for everyone? I believe in complementary care between NDs and MDs, and I don’t interfere with what your MD recommends. Come see me if you are ready to take an active role in your health and to be encouraged to live the best life you can.
2. If I take prescription medications, can I still see a Naturopathic Doctor?
Yes. Because natural medicines can be so effective, it is important that you understand how they may interact with other prescription medications you are taking. Naturopathic Doctor are specially trained in understanding and avoiding these interactions by prescribing complementary natural treatments appropriately.
3. Are Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) ‘Doctors’?
NDs in Ontario are regulated under the Registered Health Professions Act (RHPA) and were granted the privilege to use the doctor title and the protected title of Naturopathic Doctor. Being a regulated health professional enables naturopathic doctors to provide diagnoses and treat various health conditions. In Ontario, Naturopathic doctors have passed regulated board exams to hold this title.

Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are not medical doctors (MDs). However, there are similar areas of education and training that overlap. Naturopathic Doctors in Ontario have training in pharmacology, minor surgery, phlebotomy, biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, physical medicine, health psychology, etc.

In addition, NDs are required to complete continuing education credits to maintain an active and current naturopathic medical scope of practice.
4. What health problems do you treat?
Naturopathic doctors are trained to treat most of the things you would see your family doctor for. We are really good at taking the time to figure out the root cause of the problem while offering ways to reduce the symptoms. To name a few, here are some of the health concerns that people come to see me for:

  • Digestive Issues
  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Allergies
  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Chronic Inflammation
  • Hormonal Issues
  • Stress Management
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sleep Disorder
  • Weight Loss

I also see many people who don’t have any current problems—they simply want to improve their diet, focus on exercise, and live healthy lives.

Did You Know ?

1. Did You Know Naturopathic Medicine is Covered By Many Extended Health Insurance Plans?
Depending on your specific health insurance plan, naturopathic visits may be covered by insurance. With the expansion of naturopathic medicine throughout Canada, more insurance companies have recognized the growing preference for naturopathic medicine. So if you have an extended health insurance plan double check with your provider to see if and how much coverage you receive for naturopathic medicine.
2. Did You Know Naturopathic Medicine Can Go Hand In Hand With Conventional Medical Care?
Naturopathic medicine is ideal for providing complementary care to existing conventional medical care. Naturopathic doctors are willing and able to provide stand-alone primary care and can also often provide complementary care to address the patient from a different perspective. NDs will often provide additional treatment recommendations that work in conjunction with conventional approaches or when conventional intervention is the most appropriate. The best results are often obtained from a team-based approach and including conventional medicine and naturopathic medicine on that team is important.
3. Did You Know naturopathic medicine can treat both Common and Complex Ailments?
Naturopathic medicine treats common ailments including allergies, muscle pain, headaches, fatigue, diabetes, hypertension, sleep troubles, and digestive problems including constipation, diarrhea, reflux, or IBS. In addition to common conditions, naturopathic medicine is also beneficial when treating more complex medical diagnoses including neurological disorders, hormone or endocrine disorders, and patients who experience symptoms that do not necessarily point to a clear diagnosis.

Naturopathic doctors work well with patients who experience more complex medical conditions or who have a diagnosis for which the conventional system offers limited treatment interventions. Because naturopathic medicine looks at the individual person and their symptoms, it can utilize a variety of tools to treat a wide range of complaints.
4. Did you know Naturopathic Doctors are Provincially Licensed and Regulated?
Prior to attending Naturopathic school, individuals must possess a bachelor's degree and meet additional prerequisite requirements. Then Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) must graduate from an accredited naturopathic college where they receive high levels of medical training both in conventional interventions and alternative options to treatments.

Prior to provincial licensing, graduates must pass several board exams. Once licensed, naturopathic doctors are required to obtain a specific number of hours of continuing education annually as determined by provincial regulations.
